Going in Circles with the Lord

Following God’s 3 Step Plan:

by danita jenae

You can’t put the old wine in the new wine skins!

Child, let it go. Let me make something new.

But I’m so frustrated with what I can’t seem to do!

Unwrap your sweet little fingers and take a Deep Breath in…

The old ways won’t work anymore. Surrender this again.

Now you have a new mind, a new goal, a new work to do

And it comes with a learning curve of all things bright and new

Not by your own strength. Not by your own might.

Filling these wine skins will be My delight.

Just trust me, obey, steady your hand,

Gird your loins. Get ready! Trust my plan.

My ways are not yours, and that is good news!

I want you to learn to walk by standing on Daddy’s shoes.

I want you to follow my steps and come along with me.

One, two, three. One, two, three.

You think we’re going in circles, but we’re dancing you see!

Trust the Lord completely,
and don’t depend on your own knowledge.
With every step you take,
think about what he wants,
and he will help you go the right way.
— Proverbs 3:5-6 ERV

More Scripture refered to in this poem:

  • Mark 2:18-21 (No one puts old wine into new wine skins!)
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 (The old has gone. The new has come!)
  • Isaiah 43:18-19 (Forget about the past! Behold! I am doing a new thing! Don't you perceive it?)
  • Zechariah 4:6 (Not by strength or might, but by My Spirit, says the Lord!)
  • 1 Corinthians 2 (All about how we get our wisdom from the Holy Spirit and that we have the mind of Christ.)
  • Isaiah 55:8-9 (God's thoughts are far higher than ours!)
  • Proverbs 3:5-6 (Surrender to the Lord. Trust him with all your heart. Don't depend on your own understanding. Submit to the Lord and He'll guide your every step. Sounds like dancing to me!)

In Linguistics 101, I learned about different cultural forms of thinking. There's linear forms of rhetoric, like in the Western world. And there are circular forms of rhetoric, like in Jesus' hometown.

You and I may be bent towards going forward in one direction. We want a three-step plan to get us to our fixed goal. It's how we were raised.

But have you noticed that the Lord Jesus often loops us back around in circles. It's not that we're going nowhere with Him. Nope. It's that He's helping us focus. Helping us center our gaze on the One Thing that matters most... His beautiful face- full of mercy and truth.
